When I first started describing HM+Barrier™ in conversations, I noticed that people’s eyes glazed over somewhere around the word “phytoplacenta.” Which is fair. The name is technical. It exists because the chemistry is technical. But you should not have to be a chemist to understand what goes on your face.
So here, in plain English, is what HM+Barrier™ is — and why it exists.
The short version.
HM+Barrier™ is a trademarked three-botanical complex that is the active core of every Talitha Koum product. It contains:
- A patented White Dandelion placenta extract (the scientific star)
- Peach flower extract (for antioxidant support)
- Green tea flower extract (for calming reactive skin)
The patent that protects the White Dandelion portion — US Patent No. 11,684,564 B2 — was granted in 2023. The trademark HM+Barrier™ itself was registered in the United States in 2024.
Why “phytoplacenta” and not just “dandelion extract”?
Most white dandelion skincare uses what is called a whole-plant or leaf extract. You blend the plant, extract the soluble compounds, and call it a day. The problem is that the active phytochemicals — the compounds that actually calm inflammation and support the skin barrier — are concentrated unevenly. You get a lot of water and cellulose, and a small amount of the good stuff.
Phytoplacenta is different. In a flower, the placenta is the tissue that nourishes the developing ovules — the reproductive center. It is where growth factors and bioactive compounds are densest. Extracting from phytoplacenta is like choosing to squeeze only the center of an orange, where the juice is sweetest.
The challenge is that you cannot harvest flower placenta at scale without destroying a lot of flowers. Which is where plant cell culture comes in.
How we grow the extract without growing more plants.
Our process starts with a small sample of living placental tissue from a single white dandelion. That sample is then cultured — grown, under controlled temperature, light, and nutrient conditions, in a laboratory environment — until it produces the same active compounds it would produce in the wild, but at higher concentrations.
The upsides are significant:
- No damage to wild populations — white dandelion is native to Korea and we do not want to deplete it
- Consistent potency — every batch contains a verified concentration of active compounds
- Higher phytochemical density — optimized conditions yield more of the secondary metabolites that actually benefit skin
- Year-round availability — we are not dependent on Korean growing seasons
You should not have to choose between science and nature. The whole point of biotechnology done carefully is that you do not.
Why three botanicals instead of one.
We could have shipped the dandelion extract on its own and called it a day. Many brands would have. We chose to build it out into a three-part complex because sensitive skin rarely has only one problem.
1. White Dandelion Phytoplacenta (the patented ingredient)
Rich in Vitamins A, B, and B2. Addresses inflammatory response. Supports the skin’s endogenous rebuilding.
2. Prunus Persica (Peach) Flower Extract
A potent antioxidant layer. Polyphenols and flavonoids that neutralize the oxidative stress that triggers premature aging. This is the anti-aging work that the dandelion alone does not do.
3. Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Flower Extract
Saponins and catechins that target the deeper calming work. Different molecular profile than the dandelion — acts on different cellular pathways, so the two reinforce rather than duplicate each other.
Together, they cover calming, antioxidant protection, and barrier support in a single complex. Which is why every Talitha Koum product contains all three.
What HM+Barrier™ does not claim to do.
A note, because this matters to us: HM+Barrier™ is a cosmetic complex, not a pharmaceutical. It is not a treatment for eczema, rosacea, or any medical skin condition. If your skin has conditions that require clinical care, please see a dermatologist. What we can tell you is that we have designed a complex that works alongside dermatological care for people with reactive, compromised skin — and that our clinical panels have repeatedly demonstrated its tolerability.
That is the careful answer. It is the only answer worth giving.
