The Founder

Moonsun didn’t set out to build a beauty brand.

She set out to formulate the one thing her own skin could tolerate. Twelve years later, it happened to become a brand.

Moonsun — Founder of Talitha Koum

Moonsun was born with a genetic predisposition to keloids — raised, reactive scars that form where ordinary skin would simply heal. As a child, a small scrape could become a permanent mark. As a teenager, every new cosmetic product was a gamble. By adulthood, she had learned to read the underside of her own skin the way a sommelier reads wine: slowly, carefully, with a long memory for what it could and could not tolerate.

What she did not have, for most of her life, was a skincare product she could trust.

The turning point came indirectly. A family member, visiting from the countryside, brought her a dried bouquet of white dandelion — taraxacum coreanum, native to the Korean peninsula and used in traditional Eastern medicine for centuries to calm inflammation and support healing. Brewed as tea, it did for her system what topical products had failed to do. Her skin quieted. The redness receded. The next morning, her reflection looked like someone who had slept.

“I kept waiting for the product that made sense for skin like mine. After twelve years of waiting, I understood I was going to have to make it.”

The twelve-year research.

Most White Dandelion skincare on the market relies on a crude leaf or root extract — inconsistent in potency, variable in purity, and largely unproven in clinical testing. Moonsun wanted more. She wanted to isolate the exact part of the plant where its anti-inflammatory and barrier-repair compounds are most concentrated — the placental tissue of the flower — and she wanted to do it in a way that did not deplete a native Korean species.

She brought in a team of phytochemists. They developed a plant-cell-culture process that takes a minuscule amount of living flower tissue and, under optimized environmental conditions, cultivates the active compounds in a lab — yielding higher phytochemical concentrations than any field-harvested extract, without touching a single wild plant.

The result, after years of iteration, was Taraxacum Coreanum Phytoplacenta Culture Extract — the active ingredient now protected under US Patent No. 11,684,564 B2 and its Korean counterpart. It became the foundation of HM+Barrier™, Talitha Koum’s signature complex: the patented extract layered with peach and green tea flower extracts, now trademarked in the United States.

The name.

“Talitha Koum” is an Aramaic phrase — little girl, I say to you, arise. It sat with Moonsun through every late night in the lab, every failed formulation, every skin-test panel that came back inconclusive. She thought of the women who had been told, implicitly or otherwise, that their skin was something to manage rather than something that could heal. She thought of her own mother. She thought of her daughters, who carry the same genes.

The brand is named for them.

Recognition, then a flagship.

Talitha Koum launched quietly in Seoul and, within eighteen months, had won Allure Korea’s Best of Beauty award — not once, but for two consecutive years. The packaging won the iF Design Award in 2024 and a Red Dot Design Award in 2023. Dermatest, the German dermatological certifier, awarded the core products its Excellent tier on sensitive skin. The Vegan Society and PETA certified the formulations.

In 2023, Moonsun opened TK&, the brand’s flagship store in Seongsu-dong — Seoul’s design district. It is part skincare studio, part gallery, part tea room. The resident mascot is a family of hedgehogs, chosen for the same reason the brand exists: because the world’s most sensitive creatures are often its most resilient.

“I wanted a brand that did not apologize for being careful.”

Now, the United States.

Moonsun is bringing Talitha Koum to America for the women she has been quietly corresponding with for years — editors, dermatologists, and readers who have written to her about their own skin. Women in their thirties, forties, and fifties who have spent a lifetime trying to find products that work with reactive skin rather than against it. Women who are tired of labels that say “gentle” and do not mean it.

She remains the sole formulator of every Talitha Koum product. She still personally approves every new batch before it ships. She is, and will remain, the brand’s first and most exacting customer.
